The University of Macau (UM) recently held a four-week training course for owners and employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Macao. Organised by UM’s Centre for Continuing Education, the course was taught by representatives of government departments in the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, representatives of the Macao SAR government, experts and scholars of UM, representatives of financial institutions, and local SME owners who have successfully established their businesses in Hengqin. The course covered a wide range of issues, including the relationship between the In-depth Cooperation Zone and the economic diversification of Macao; the operation of the cooperation zone and its policies, development plans, and framework; and how SMEs in Macao can take part in the development of the zone’s various industries, such as traditional Chinese medicine, tourism and exhibition, and finance.
